This just gives me gas
You know the deal – greed and gluttony rule. The world is truly on its head when someone like pompous mega-dork Thomas Friedman is actually starting to make sense. But here it is:
His article in Sept. 13th’s NY Times, entitled “Making America Stupid” is about drilling – America’s catastrophic dependence on digging holes in the ground while pretending to look for a “light at the end of the tunnel.”
It’s not about our current problem of predatory gas companies preying on uninformed local people, but it is a close allegory.
Read it and weep.

An aside about “drill, baby, drill!”–as some of you know, I grew up in Santa Barbara, which in 1969 witnessed the worst oil spill of its day, and I have vivid memories how horrific that was. I have to think that drilling technology has improved since then, but we need “invent, baby, invent.”
Tonight, I am remembering more about that catastrophic spill. In particular, I remember the terrible smell in the air, going down to the beach with my dad and a friend of his in a truck with bales of hay–we and others threw hay on the incoming tide, which just seems so very quixotic now when I recall it. And I saw the birds, the seagulls drenched in black goo, their wings pasted to their bodies and their eyes glued shut. So many died. And my brothers and sisters grew up coming home from the beach (any beach, from Isla Vista to Summerland) to clean tar off our feet before we could go in the house. Beach tar was a way of life…how amazed I was when we moved back east and there wasn’t any beach tar.
But I digress (as usual). The time has come for alternative energies, and .. whoa … conservation.
