Making Sure We Get It Right:

Health, Land, Law and Natural Gas Drilling

October 29, 2008, 7:00 – 9:00 PM

West Middle School, Binghamton NY

This powerful forum featuring international, national, and local leaders on the issues, will provide our community members and our leaders with the information they need in order to understand the impact of natural gas drilling and how we can protect ourselves. With our region all too familiar with the toxic legacy of IBM, we need to make sure we get this right for the long-term health and safety of our communities.

Panelists:

Dr. Theo Colborn (via remote)

President, the Endo Disruption Exchange (TEDX).

A world-renowned expert in the field of endocrinology, Dr. Colburn has testified before congress regarding the short and long-term health repercussions of natural gas drilling.

Dr. Colburn is the co-Author of Our Stolen Future: Are We Threatening Our Fertility, Intelligence, and Survival?

Bruce Baizel

Staff Attorney, Oil & Gas Accountability Project.
Nationally recognized expert in the field of natural gas drilling and regulation, Baizel has assisted state legislatures in Colorado and New Mexico in reviewing and updating oil and gas regulations, and was recently invited to present testimony to the Committee on Environmental Protection of the New York City Council about the potential impact of gas drilling around the watershed that supplies drinking water for New York City.

Roger Downs

Conservation Associate, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter.

Roger Downs has a strong academic background and many years of community activism in ecology, environmental law, and environmental impact analysis. Downs has organized successful grassroots conservation efforts, including working with Article 78 lawsuits, the SEQR process, protection of wetlands, and combating sprawl.

Bill Pammer

Commissioner, Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management.

Dr. Pammer has expertise in economic development, comprehensive planning, program evaluation, organization development methodologies, and community capacity building. As Commissioner, he has been very active in the gas drilling issue, strongly advocating for laws that improve a municipality’s ability to control and mitigate the negative impacts of gas drilling.

Rachel Treichler

Attorney.

Attorney Rachel Treichler specializes in freedom of information, election and campaign law, renewable energy, wind, oil and gas, mineral rights, groundwater, water and riparian rights matters.

Note:  The Department of Environmental Conservation will be holding a scoping hearing in the Southern Tier in mid-November.  At this hearing, they will begin to establish new regulations on gas drilling.  Thus our event provides information at a crucial time.

This will be an important forum. All speakers are confirmed, but we need to raise some funds to make this happen!! This is an urgent request for small contributions to continue educating around this important new issue that will affect our communities for decades!!
