Shaleshock.org – Grassroots group of Finger Lakes residents who are concerned with understanding and protecting our communities and environment from exploitation by the energy industry with regards to drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale. “Damascus Citizens…”- started in Damascus township in Pennsylvania, and concerns itself with the health and welfare of the entire Delaware River Basin, including both Pennsylvania and New York State. We are focused on the Upper Delaware Basin – counties in New York and Pennsylvania are the two sides of this coin.
“…for Sustainability” - because we are looking to the future. It is our right and obligation as citizens to participate in the choices that will affect our future. DCS’s concern is for the health and sustainability of life here for us as people, and for the entire ecosystem we and all those downstream depend on. We have to work together to assure this treasure is safe.
DCS is part of a countrywide coalition of groups of citizens speaking from their homes, who do not want their environment and lives and communities further ruined by the current irresponsible approach to energy sourcing. Sustainability is in our name because we recognize that there are other ways of getting and using energy. These ways are with us now and will be developed quickly if we demand them.
A wise man told me once that “The right to own property does not convey with it the privilege of harming people, communities or the environment. Law pretending to uphold property rights while empowering corporations or property-owners to destroy community, the environment on which all life depends, or the enjoyment of community and property by others, is illegitimate law.”
Right now the safeguarding of our future is not what is happening and that is what we want changed. We are so very creative. The response to this need for energy can be to develop renewable and sustainable energy. This can happen SO quickly now that it is clear that we have to do so. Our creative vitality can respond with zero carbon, non contaminating sources and methods if we put OUR energy into that goal.
